Cebu-based Visayan Electric is ramping up investments in substations, transmission upgrades, and smart grid technology in a bid to secure reliable and resilient electricity supply for its fast-growing franchise area, which spans four cities and four municipalities across Cebu island.

Nico Arancillo, Assistant Vice President for Engineering Technical Support, said the utility currently serves more than 516,000 customers, with demand projected to grow by 5 per cent annually—reaching nearly 1,000 MVA (Mega Volt-Ampere) within the next eight years.

While residential accounts make up 91 percent of its customer base, industrial users drive almost 60 per cent of energy sales, underscoring the critical role of electricity reliability in Cebu’s economic expansion.

To meet rising consumption, Visayan Electric has energized two new substations in 2025—the Inayawan and Sarrosa substations—adding 66 MVA of capacity, with plans to double these facilities to 132 MVA in the next two years.
