The Cebu City Council has requested the Office of the Mayor to convene a special body tasked to harmonize the policies, guidelines, and operations of the Night Market to ensure order, fairness, and sustainability.

The move came after Councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover, who chairs the Committee on Market, delivered a privilege speech urging Mayor Nestor Archival to convene the Garbo Asenso Sumbanan Alyansa (GASA) sa Gugma Board.

In his speech during the council’s recent regular session, Alcover raised concerns about an initiative that has become a lifeline for many constituents, the Night Market of Cebu City.

Alcover said that in recent months the public has witnessed how the night market has provided opportunities to small entrepreneurs, food vendors, artisans, and others.

“Mr. Chair, the night market has become a vibrant hub where our people can sell their products, showcase their creativity, and earn a decent income,” Alcover said.

He said the night market, to many, is not just a source of livelihood but also a means to provide for their families and send their children to school.

“At the same time, our constituents and visitors enjoy affordable meals, local delicacies, and homegrown goods in a safe and lively setting,” said Alcover.
