Bamboo and coffee farm eyed

Cebu Province is poised to redefine its agricultural legacy through a pioneering 300-hectare pilot farm that will combine giant bamboo cultivation with coffee intercropping.

Former Agriculture secretary Manny Piñol said that Governor Pamela Baricuatro told him that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional office offered a 300-hectare lot for tree farming.

"She actually asked me what could be done in the area and I told her I have to take a look at the area but having visited several parts of the province since she asked me to be her food security adviser, I believe that Giant Bamboo would thrive in Cebu," Piñol said.

Piñol further proposed experimental coffee planting between bamboo clumps --an agroforestry concept that, if successful, could pave the way for local farmers to support Cebu’s re-greening efforts.
