Cover-up exposed in hospital injection in wrong eye

A high-profile investigation at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram has revealed that a 59-year-old patient, Ms Azoora Beevi, was administered an intravitreal injection in the wrong eye and that medical records appear to have been altered to conceal the error.
Ms Beevi was admitted for treatment of fluid accumulation in her left eye, yet the injection was given in her right eye by Dr Sujeesh S S, Assistant Professor, who was suspended on 3 June 2025 following a complaint.
The inquiry committee, appointed by the principal of the medical college, obtained statements from nursing staff confirming that original records documented the left eye as the intended site.
