Court hears clash of claims

Sudhakar Shirsat, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), on Tuesday informed the Thane court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Ganesh Pawar, that since 2022, a total of 1,486 people have lost their lives and 266 have been injured at the same location where the recent Mumbra train tragedy occurred.
Shirsat was speaking while seeking the custody of two railway engineers in connection with the accident.
"This year alone, 19 people have died and 12 have been injured at that spot," Shirsat said, attributing the recurring incidents to alleged negligence on the part of the engineers. According to him, despite receiving caution orders from their office, the officials failed to carry out essential track maintenance. Their lapse, he said, contributed to the June 9 accident that claimed five lives and injured several others.
