Nashik drug menace alarming: LS data

News of interstate drug rackets operating across Maharashtra — particularly in Nashik — has intensified concerns about the region’s growing narcotics problem. Nashik MP Rajabhau Parag Prakash Waje raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, seeking clarity from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the scale of the threat. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai submitted a written reply on Dec 2.

According to the reply, data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022 and 2023 lays bare the extent of the crisis. A total of 33,423 people were arrested in Maharashtra under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during these two years. More than 42,230kg of solid drugs and 12,176 litres of liquid drugs were seized, and 11,693 people were convicted.
