A Supreme Court bench presided by Justices J. K. Maheshwari and N. V. Anjaria is hearing a petition from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam asking that a former apex court judge be placed in charge of investigating the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives.

The petition challenges the Madras High Court’s decision to constitute a Special Investigation Team of Tamil Nadu police officers and questions the impartiality of the existing arrangement.
