Amit Sharma, MD & CEO, Tata Consulting Engineers, talks about India's expanding renewable capacity and future roadmap
-
How do you look at the growth trend of renewable energy capacity in the country?
India's renewable energy growth has been both consistent and impressive. Over the past ten years, the sector has achieved a compound annual growth rate of about fifteen per cent. As of September 2025, the total installed renewable capacity, including large hydro, is around 247 GW, representing nearly half of India's total power capacity. In the first half of 2025 alone, India added about 27 GW of new renewable capacity, which is more than 50 per cent higher than the same period last year. A further 40 GW of projects are in the pipeline at various stages of approval.
This performance highlights the success of long-term government policies, a supportive investment climate, and increasing maturity of the private sector in building and operating large scale renewable assets. The scale and pace place India among the fastest growing renewable markets in the world. India's target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 and the net-zero commitment by 2070 reflect both ambition and capability. Few countries globally have expanded their clean energy ecosystem at this scale and speed, while balancing affordability, energy security, and social inclusion.
