Depression prompts red alert

A well-marked low-pressure area off the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the coast of Tamil Nadu, is showing signs of intensification and is expected to develop into a depression within the next 12 hours, according to updates from the India Meteorological Department.
The system, which moved northwestwards from a position near north SriLanka, was centred near the Tamil Nadu coast this morning and is forecast to deepen over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu and south AndhraPradesh coasts.
Concurrently, the regional meteorological centre in Chennai has flagged the potential for inland movement across north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh within the subsequent 12 hours, prompting heightened local alerts.
