YOUR BODY CLOCK & DISEASE: WHY TIMING MATTERS IN MEDICINE

Beyond just when you take a pill or get a good night's rest, your body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm, plays a crucial role in how your organs function, how medicines work, and even when diseases strike.

The circadian rhythm is a 24-hour cycle controlled by the brain's "master clock," the suprachiasmatic nucleus, located in the hypothalamus. This internal clock synchronizes with environmental cues such as light, temperature, and meal times to regulate everything from hormone secretion to cell repair. When this rhythm is disturbed-say, due to erratic sleep, late-night screen time, or shift work-it can trigger a cascade of health problems.
