Wicked and Wuthering

"Love is not love, which alters when it alteration finds," wrote William Shakespeare in the 1590s.

- AFFAN YESVI

One is reminded of these beautiful words while watching the enchanting 'Wuthering Heights', directed by Emerald Fennell. The love, passion and vengeance that blazes through the lives of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff sears not just them, but all those whose lives are intertwined with theirs.'Wuthering Heights', written by Emily Bronte in the mid-1840s in Victorian England, is said to have inspired more than 35 film and television productions. Emerald Fennell’s film, which released on 13th February, is not a strict adaptation of the novel. Bronte purists are aghast, but perhaps one may leave the handwring-ing aside.

Fennell’s vision of 'Wuthering Heights' stays true to the wild, untamed, perilous love of the doomed lovers Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. "My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary," declares Catherine in the book. Fennell brings alive the turbulent, stormy Yorkshire moors - which seem to mirror the fierce passions of the star-crossed lovers.
