TIPS FOR KIDNEY HEALTH AND POST-TRANSPLANT LIFESTYLE CARE

Kidney health is crucial for overall well-being, and once someone undergoes a kidney transplant, maintaining the new organ requires special attention. Understanding kidney-friendly habits and post-transplant lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve longevity and quality of life.

The kidneys filter approximately 50 gallons of blood daily, removing toxins, excess salts, and waste products through urine. They also regulate blood pressure, produce hormones for red blood cell production, and maintain bone health by balancing calcium and phosphorus. Damage to the kidneys can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD) or kidney failure, making transplantation necessary.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking adequate water is essential for kidney function. Water helps flush out toxins and reduces the risk of kidney stones and urinary tract infections. Adults should aim for 6-8 glasses of water daily, but individuals with kidney disease should follow their doctor's guidance.

2. Eat a Kidney-Friendly Diet

A balanced diet supports kidney health. Key recommendations include:

Reduce salt intake: Excess sodium increases blood pressure, straining the kidneys.

Limit processed foods: Packaged foods are high in salt and unhealthy fats.

Eat fresh fruits and vegetables: These provide antioxidants and essential nutrients.

Moderate protein intake: Excess protein can overwork the kidneys. Opt for lean sources like fish, chicken, and legumes.

3. Monitor Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar
