MESSI'S TOUR AS A LENS ON INDIA'S FOOTBALL MEMORY

How Messi's India tour became a spectacle and branding, not football: Brief appearances, VIP-first access, and a curated Vantara finale left paying fans feeling shortchanged, fueling online anger.
-
At the end of Lionel Messi's December 2025 India sprint, the images that lingered were not of a competitive match, not even of a goal.
They were of a 38-year-old global icon waving quickly from a stadium track, edging through a crush of officials, and then—almost as a palate cleanser—spending an extra day at Vantara, the Ambani-founded wildlife rescue and conservation centre in Jamnagar. The arc of the trip, in other words, ran from public frenzy to curated intimacy: four cities, ticketed appearances, and a final stop that looked designed for the camera as much as for the guest. Messi himself tried to put a ribbon on it. In a post-tour message, he thanked India for the “warm reception” and “generous hospitality,” calling them “amazing visits,” and added a line that sounded like both blessing and aspiration: he hoped football has a “bright future” here.
It’s a flattering closing note. But if you want to understand Indian football's psychology—its pride, its insecurity, its hunger for validation—you look less at the scripted gratitude and more at the messy middle. Because Messi's tour, even in its missteps, wasn't just a celebrity roadshow. It was a stress test of India's relationship with football: the yearning to be seen by the world’s biggest star, the friction between spectacle and sport, and the old, unresolved question: do mega-visits build an ecosystem or simply light up the sky for a night?
