Weather changes affect all of us in different ways, but for people with asthma, the shiftin seasons can be especially challenging.
-
Asthma is a condition in which the airwaysin the lungsbecome inflamed and narrow, making it difficult to breathe.
While asthma can be triggered by many factors like dust, pollution, or exercise, sudden changes in weather area common cause of asthma flareups. Understanding how and why weather affects asthma can help people manage their symptoms better and stay safe throughout the year.
Our lungs are sensitive to the air we breathe. When the weather changes, especially quickly or drastically, the quality, temperature, and humidity of the air can change too. These shifts can irritate the airways of people with asthma, causing inflammation and making it harder to breathe. For example, cold air can dry out the airways, while hot, humid air can make it feel heavy and difficult to breathe. Both conditions can lead to asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Cold air is one of the most common weather-related asthma triggers. When cold, dry air enters the lungs, it can irritate the sensitive lining of the airways and cause them to narrow. This narrowing leads to difficulty in breathing and often causes coughing fits. Winter is a particularly tough season for asthma sufferers, especially when they go outside without covering their nose and mouth. The risk is even higher during physical activities in cold weather, such as walling fast or exercising outdoors, because you breathe more heavily, pulling in more of the cold air that can trigger symptoms.
