Heat stroke in India: Understanding causes, symptoms, and prevention
The Daily Guardian
|May 20, 2025
Heat stroke is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's temperature regulation system fails due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

In India, where summer temperatures often soar above 40°C, heat stroke poses a significant health risk, especially during heatwaves. This article delves into the causes, symptoms, and preventive measures to combat heat stroke in the Indian context.
What Is Heat Stroke?
Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness. It occurs when the body's core temperature rises above 40°C (104°F), overwhelming the body's ability to cool itself. This leads to the failure of the thermoregulatory system, causing damage to vital organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles.
CAUSES OF HEAT STROKE
Several factors contribute to the onset of heat stroke:
High Environmental Temperatures: Prolonged exposure to hot and humid conditions, especially during peak summer months, increases the risk.
Physical Exertion: Engaging in strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day can lead to heat stroke.
Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake reduces the body's ability to sweat and maintain a normal body temperature.
Inappropriate Clothing: Wearing dark-colored, tight, or non-breathable clothing can trap heat and hinder the body's cooling mechanisms.
Health Conditions: Individuals with chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, or respiratory disorders, are more susceptible.
Medications: Certain drugs, like diuretics and antihistamines, can impair the body's ability to regulate temperature.
Age: The elderly and young children have a reduced capacity to adapt to extreme heat.
