Historically, Gulmarg's "Chillai Kalan" ensured ample snow for winter sports, but an 80% precipitation deficit has led to dry slopes, water shortages, and forest fires. Experts link this to weakened western disturbances, causing prolonged dry spells and record-high temperatures. These climatic shifts threaten winter sports and ecosystems, requiring urgent adaptive measures.

For centuries, Indian festivals have been intricately linked to specific seasons and environmental cues: Holi: Celebrated in March, Holi marks the end of winter and the advent of spring.

This festival of colors coincides with moderate temperatures and the blooming of flora, symbolizing renewal and joy.

Makar Sankranti and Pongal: Observed in January, these festivals signify the winter harvest, relying on the culmination of the northeast monsoon. They are times of gratitude, reflecting the successful yield of crops.

Diwali: Falling between October and November, Diwali marks the end of the harvest season and the onset of cooler, drier weather.
