Dreadful History Of India-Pakistan Wars

When India and Pakistan emerged from the ruins of British colonial rule in 1947, they were born not just as neighbours, but as adversaries shaped by clashing ideologies. A secular, pluralistic India and a newly formed Islamic Pakistan were destined to be entangled in a rivalry that would define South Asian geopolitics for decades. At the heart of their enduring hostility lies Kashmir—a princely state whose contested accession became the epicentre of wars, insurgencies, and international crises. But beyond the bullet points of battles, what emerges is a complex tapestry of competing narratives. This historiographic journey traces the wars, proxy battles, and perceptions that have divided the subcontinent for over 75 years.

THE FIRST WAR (1947-48): ORIGINS OF AN ENDLESS DISPUTE

In October 1947, just months after Partition, tribal militias backed by Pakistan stormed into Kashmir, ostensibly to support a Muslim uprising. Caught off guard, the Hindu ruler Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India, prompting Indian troops to airlift into the valley. The fighting that ensued lasted into 1948, ending with a UN-brokered cease-fire that divided Kashmir between the two nations along a ceasefire line—later the Line of Control (LoC). India maintained that it acted legally to repel aggression; Pakistan claimed it was aiding an oppressed Muslim majority. Neutral observers blame the rushed and chaotic Partition, with Kashmir's unresolved status sowing the seeds of an enduring conflict. The plebiscite promised in UN resolutions never came, and the war entrenched competing foundation myths: Indian liberation vs. Pakistani solidarity. This first war crystallised Kashmir as a symbol of identity and injustice on both sides.
