Bengal Sports Minister steps down after Messi visit fiasco

West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas resigned from his post on Tuesday following the chaotic scenes that erupted during football legend Lionel Messi's visit to Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium last week, an incident that left the State Government red-faced and triggered a political storm ahead of crucial assembly elections.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted Biswas's resignation and announced she would personally oversee the Sports and Youth Welfare Department until an impartial inquiry into the December 13 incident is completed. In a statement, Banerjee said she appreciated the “sentiment and intention” of the Sports Minister, adding: “I think he is very much correct and until and unless the impartial inquiry is over, the Sports Department will be looked after by me for the time being.”
