Cornwall's birdlife inspires gallery's latest exhibition

OUR feathered friends are the focus of the latest exhibition at Penzance's Penlee House Gallery as it continues a series looking at the effects of changes to the climate and lifestyles on the environment.

Entitled Birds: the Art of Cornwall's Birdlife, it explores how artists working in Cornwall from the 1870s to the present have been inspired by them.

It features paintings by artists such as Charles Simpson, Frank Heath, John Wells and Bryan Wynter, rarely seen Victorian engravings and taxidermy as well as contemporary photography and video.

The exhibition explores birds and their habitats as seen through the eyes of artists working in Cornwall over the past three centuries.

The exhibition is divided into a number of themes, from the ubiquitous gulls to other birds found on and around Cornwall's shoreline, garden birds and domestic fowl.
