SYNERGIES: HOW CANAL+ WILL TURN AROUND BATTLING PAY-TV COMPANY

- Hilton Tarrant Moneyweb

MultiChoice's rescue

PROGRESS. Slashing the price of decoders late last year has had 'some effect' and the group now plans to lower the entry cost.

(Reuters)

Canal+ will pump nearly R2 billion during 2026 into a plan to restart subscriber growth at newly acquired MultiChoice, following more than three years of decline.

CEO of the French pay-TV operator Maxime Saada admits that stemming subscriber losses in its Englishand Portuguese-speaking markets will be a big ask, as the business has been losing an average of 1.6 million subscribers a year.

The €100 million "boost" plan will be funded through an acceleration of its "synergies" plan where it expects €150 million (about R2.8 billion) in cost reductions this year.

It now expects that number to increase to €250 million, despite it only taking control of the Randburg-based business "less than six months ago".

Cyril's talk taken with pinch of salt

While it's refreshing to hear President Cyril Ramaphosa insisting that no-one - not even those with links to him - will be shielded from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry's findings, forgive us for taking this talk with a pinch of salt, as numerous inquiries and commissions set up by government have led to little, if any, justice.
