COMMISSIONS: CYRIL'S PLAN RIDICULED BY PARTIES
A decade and six commissions later, South Africa got another on Sunday night – appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and chaired by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
It will look into allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkwanazi that there is a massive drugs and crime syndicate deeply embedded in the top echelons of government and involving corrupt cops across the country.
He also pointed the finger at police minister Senzo Mchunu, accusing him of closing down a special unit dedicated to probing political assassinations.
The president's announcement on Sunday was ridiculed by rival political parties and civil society groups demanding swift action.
This commission will be the second inquiry in 2025, following President Ramaphosa's May announcement of an investigation into the delay in investigating Truth and Reconciliation Commission matters.
Here are some of the most recent commissions of inquiry:
Nugent commission into Sars
Possibly the most impactful, the Commission into the South Africa Revenue Service (Sars) was launched in May 2018.
