JSE sell-off continues on trade war worries

The JSE All Share Index crashed below the 80 000-point level for the first time this year in early morning trade yesterday, after opening a massive 5% weaker as Trump tariffs and worries around a full-blown global trade war continued to rock world markets.

However, the local market regained some ground by the mid-morning, trading around 1.5% weaker and back above the psychological 80 000 points mark just before 11am.

US President Donald Trump's tariffs broadside last week against most nations, including South Africa, roiled global financial markets.

In early morning trade, the Alsi plunged over 5% to a low of 77 165 points at one stage, before recovering most losses yesterday.
