Cape Town pays out R50m for solar

Cape Town's innovative Cash for Power programme has hit a significant milestone, with businesses and households collectively earning over R50 million since its launch in 2022-23.
The city remains the only metro in South Africa to purchase surplus solar photovoltaic (PV) power from small-scale generators, with more than 1800 participants benefitting.
Under the programme, power sellers initially receive automatic municipal bill credits, reducing their costs to zero. Since 2023-24, eligible businesses and households can apply to receive direct cash payments once their municipal bill reaches a zero balance.
