A lighter, brighter and warmer palate of neutral tones is key to a modern aesthetic in the kitchen, says SAM WYLIE-HARRIS

IF your kitchen feels dark, dated, or has done its time and due a refurb and in need of a little TLC, there couldn’t be better time for a spruce-up.

“We're seeing a shift towards lighter, brighter kitchen spaces, with greater emphasis on the kitchen as a social hub within the home,’ says Lizzie Beesley, head of design & style at Howdens.

“Designs are increasingly balancing practical appliance and storage requirements with areas to sit, gather and interact.” Indeed, she says lifestyle enhancing products, such as boiling water taps and wine coolers, are becoming more desirable, while clever behind-the-door storage solutions are helping customers make the most of their space.

“Natural, fresh finishes continue to dominate, from soft pebble tones and calming greens to warm oak and walnut décors, paired with rich, statement worktops that add depth and definition.
