PRACTICAL AND FAMILY FOCUSED, VOLVO'S EX90 IS A SOLID AND STANDOUT SUV SHOWING WHAT ELECTRIC CARS CAN DO. BUT EVEN MINOR FUNCTIONS CAN PROVE A BIT FIDDLY

SCREEN MACHINE

VOLVO is a brand with a strong focus on electrification. While legislation may be softening, the Swedish firm still puts a lot of emphasis on battery-powered models while continuing to offer hybrid options as well. It’s why we've now got the EX90. Effectively an electric version of the popular XC90, the EX90 has seven-seater practicality to go alongside Volvo's latest tech.

WHAT'S NEW?

It is designed to be a practical, family-focused SUV which just happens to be electric. In typical Volvo fashion, that means a solid but premium-feeling interior and a host of safety assistance systems.

Underneath, the EX90 uses a similar platform to the XC90, and it’s one you'll find underneath cars like the Polestar 3.

WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET?

For now buyers have just standard dual-motor and upgraded Performance models, the former of which we're driving.

With 402bhp and 770Nm of torque it’s powerful enough to get this heavyweight up to speed in good time. Volvo claims a 0-60mph time of just 5.2 seconds.

There's a claimed range of up to 374.7 miles, but our winter test drive was more like 300.

No escaping your fitter enemy

EVERY new show needs a great opening. Something to forcefully grab the viewer's attention and maintain that vice-like grip for the next hour or so. The producers of Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they saw the rough cut of this first episode: a glimpse of the countryside, a nice burst of birdsong, sounds of a man and a woman laughing and then... two people naked in a shower. Goodness me, and it's only just past the watershed too.
