Race for Golden Boot hotting up
The Chronicle
|June 24, 2026
THE big players have been catching the eye in the global showpiece in North America.
The World Cup has so far been notable for standout performances from those tipped to battle for the Golden Boot.
Here, we look at the contenders for the prize.
LIONEL MESSI (five)
With five goals in two games, the Argentina captain has been arguably the story of the tournament so far. His first-half strike in Monday's 2-0 win over Austria saw him move ahead of Miroslav Klose as the all-time top scorer at the finals, before moving a further goal ahead in stoppage time with his 18th.
With as many as six matches possibly to come if the world champions go all the way, it is highly likely the bar will be raised again before July 19.
KYLIAN MBAPPE (four)

Expert fixers’ wash and brush up
YOU need to be quite accommodating if you work at The Repair Shop. Obviously you can specialise in fixing certain kinds of stuff - in fact, it’s best that you do; they don’t want any old ham-fisted oaf let loose in there - but you can’t pick and choose what you will and won't mend.
