However, the Northumbria University student, from Halifax, became unwell after taking class A drug MDMA at a gathering in the Rialto Building on Melbourne Street in Newcastle and died hours later.

As thousands of students begin the university year, Nathan's devastated parents Alex and Beth have warned young people of the dangers of taking illegal substances, in the hope that other families won't go through what they have.

Beth said: "This was the first, and last, time that Nathan tried MDMA and he has lost his life because of it.

"Nathan was destined for a bright future and he had so much to look forward to in his life. All of that has been taken away from him and us."
