PRESSURE COMES AFTER 26 CASUALTIES THIS YEAR ALONE

- By JAMES ROBINSON

COUNCILLORS in Northumberland have once again called for the A1 to be dualled over a year after the project was scrapped.

It follows further accidents on the key route this year.

Figures from the Transport Analysis Data Unit show that there have been 26 casualties on the single-carriageway sections of the road in Northumberland since the start of 2025 alone.

Ten casualties were left in a serious condition, and one person was killed following an accident in July.

Speaking at Wednesday's meeting of full council, Berwick West with Ord councillor Isabel Hunter said the council should continue to push for the notorious road to be dualled right up to the Scottish Border.

Addressing council leader Glen Sanderson, the Lib-Dem councillor said: "Have we got any updates on the dualling of the A1, not just to North Charlton but up to the Scottish Border?
