The Oxfordshire market town of Woodstock boasts a host attractions beyond Blenheim's rich history and beautiful archictecture. AMY JONES discovers its many charms
SOMETIMES it's the smaller things that surprise you the most.
Sitting on the eastern edge of the Cotswolds is the historic market town of Woodstock in West Oxfordshire. It's a modest place of just over 3,000 people. But there's nothing else diminutive about it.
Characterised by its elegant Georgian architecture, medieval layout and rich royal heritage, Woodstock is a heavy hitter in the beauty stakes.
It's conveniently located just 30 minutes from the city of Oxford, and within easy reach of other quaint Cotswold settlements.
But its compact size shouldn't deter you from visiting.
I was told to visit Woodstock following a stay at the beautiful hotel and pub, Killingworth Castle, nestled in the village of Wootton. While locals explained to me that Woodstock was small, they noted its independent shops and idyllic atmosphere, but those who visit are often there for one reason: to explore what has been described as "Britain's greatest palace".
