The Chester Chronicle
|March 05, 2026
A CORONER has urged canal bosses to take safety measures after the accidental death of a University of Chester student following a night out.
University of Chester student William Webb, 21
William Webb, 21, fell into the Shropshire Union canal in Chester, close to student accommodation in the city.
He was reported missing when he failed to come home after he had been drinking with friends in the city on the evening of November 22.
‘An inquest last month heard that CCTV footage showed Mr Webb, from Baxenden, near Accrington, Lancashire, walking along a path which runs alongside the canal, at about 4.30am on November 23 before “likely accidentally falling into the canal".
His body was discovered the following day.
