PUSHKAR FAIR: A SPECTACLE OF CULTURE AND CAMARADERIE IN RAJASTHAN
The Business Guardian
|November 01, 2025
The Pushkar Fair, one of India’s most spectacular and culturally rich festivals, is set to return in 2025 with even greater splendour. Scheduled from October 30 to November 5, this iconic fair transforms the small holy town of Pushkar in Rajasthan into a vibrant carnival of music, dance, devotion, and desert charm. What began as a humble cattle trading fair over a century ago has evolved into an international celebration of Rajasthan’s heritage, drawing more than 200,000 visitors every year from across the globe.
A TRADITION ROOTED IN HERITAGE
The Pushkar Fair, also known as Pushkar Mela, has deep roots in Rajasthan’s agrarian and trading traditions. Historically, it served as a gathering place for herders and traders who brought their camels, horses, and cattle for buying, selling, and breeding. Over time, the fair grew beyond its commercial purpose, becoming a massive cultural and spiritual event intertwined with the holy festival of Kartik Purnima, a sacred day in the Hindu lunar calendar.
During this period, pilgrims from all over India visit Pushkar to take a holy dip in Pushkar Lake, believed to wash away sins and bring blessings. The spiritual significance of the festival, combined with its rustic charm and festive energy, makes it a one-of-akind experience for visitors seeking to witness India’s soul in motion.
CAMELS, CULTURE, AND COLOUR
At the heart of the Pushkar Camel Fair are its majestic camels — the “ships of the desert” — who take centre stage in a series of parades, competitions, and exhibitions. Adorned with intricate jewellery, colourful fabrics, and painted patterns, these camels are paraded proudly by their owners, reflecting Rajasthan’s rich pastoral legacy. The Camel Beauty Contest remains one of the biggest attractions, where camels are judged on their appearance, posture, and adornments.
