In a recent development, the government has announced a conservative target for wheat procurement for the upcoming 2024-25 rabi marketing season.

Govt establishes conservative wheat procurement goal of 30-32 MT

Despite optimistic estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture regarding record wheat production in the preceding crop year, the procurement target has been set in the range of 30-32 million tonnes.

The decision came after a meeting chaired by Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra in the national capital, where discussions with state food secretaries took place. Following deliberations, the Ministry of Food announced the fixed estimates for wheat procurement for the forthcoming rabi marketing season.

Alongside wheat, the government has also established procurement targets for other crops. For paddy procurement, in terms of rice, the target is set within the range of 9-10 million tonnes. Additionally, a procurement target of 6,00,000 tonnes has been set for rabi coarse grains/millets.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of diversification of crops, with specific focus on millets for enhanced nutrition in dietary patterns. This strategic approach aims to optimize agricultural practices and ensure a sustainable food supply chain.
