Government Expands Price Monitoring to 38 Commodities On August 1, 2024, the Indian government announced a significant expansion in its price monitoring efforts, adding 16 new commodities to the existing list.

This update was revealed by Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, during the launch of Version 4.0 of the Price Monitoring System (PMS) Mobile App in New Delhi. The move aims to bolster the government’s ability to track and manage price trends more effectively across a broader range of essential goods.
Enhanced Monitoring Scope Previously, the Department of Consumer Affairs monitored the daily prices of 22 commodities. With the inclusion of the new items, the total number of commodities under surveillance has risen to 38. This expanded scope represents a substantial increase in the breadth of the monitoring system, covering approximately 31% of the total Consumer Price Index (CPI) weights, compared to the 26.5% covered by the initial 22 commodities.
