THE STORY BEHIND DEVOTION AND TRADITION
Gangaur is a vibrant festival celebrating the divine union of “Gan,” a name for Lord Shiva, and “Gauri,” representing Goddess Parvati, his consort. It symbolizes conjugal happiness, marital bliss, and devotion. Observed in the month of Chaitra, the first month of the Hindu calendar, the festival continues for 18 days. Newly married women are traditionally required to observe the full course of the celebration, which blends religious rituals with folklore, local customs, and community celebrations. Gangaur also commemorates historical valor, notably the victory of Rao Santhal of Jodhpur over Meer Ghudley Khan, who kidnapped over 140 maidens celebrating Gangaur in 1548. The burning lamp in rituals symbolizes courage and chivalry.
