Charani Sahitya: The Custodian of Rajput Valor and Culture
The Business Guardian
|December 20, 2025
Charan literature, or Charani Sahitya, represents one of the richest and most enduring literary traditions of western India, particularly in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
This unique body of poetry and prose was primarily created by the Charan community, who were not only poets but also historians, genealogists, and chroniclers of Rajput history. The literature reflects the ethos, values, and heroic exploits of Rajput society, preserving centuries of history, folklore, and cultural identity. Known for its eloquent and expressive style, Charan literature encompasses heroic tales, devotional songs, epic romances, and historical chronicles, often composed in languages such as Dingal, Pingala, Sanskrit, Apabhramsa, and regional dialects.
Charan literature was predominantly composed by members of the Charan caste, a community historically entrusted with documenting the deeds of kings and warriors, as well as preserving genealogical records. Other communities, such as the Bhats, also contributed to this literary tradition, often serving as court poets or chroniclers. The Charans were unique in combining the roles of poets, historians, and warriors, which allowed them to write with firsthand knowledge of the events they chronicled. Their works not only celebrated bravery and loyalty but also reinforced moral and ethical values, providing guidance to future generations.
