Supreme Court’s enduring legacy: Justice for all

Today's celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Supreme Court of the Philippines is an opportune time to reflect on the indispensable role of the nation's highest tribunal in preserving democracy, defending constitutional liberties, and ensuring that justice remains blind to power, wealth, and political influence.

For 125 years, the Supreme Court, currently led by Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, has stood as the final arbiter of legal disputes and the ultimate guardian of the Constitution. Its decisions have shaped the course of the nation, defined the limits of governmental authority, and protected the rights of citizens in moments of both stability and crisis. Through changing administrations and shifting political landscapes, the Court has remained a vital pillar of democratic governance.

The judiciary occupies a unique position in government. Unlike the executive branch, it commands no army. Unlike the legislature, it enacts no laws. Its strength rests solely on the public's faith that judges and justices will decide cases according to the Constitution and the rule of law. That trust is among the most precious assets of any democratic society, and it must be preserved at all costs.
