Many people think snoring is harmless. What exactly is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common form is obstructive sleep apnea, where the muscles of the throat relax and block the airway. These pauses in breathing can happen dozens of times an hour, reducing oxygen levels and disrupting deep, restorative sleep. While snoring is a common symptom, sleep apnea is far more serious.

Is this condition common in India?

Yes, and the worrying part is that many cases remain undiagnosed. Many people dismiss snoring or daytime fatigue as normal, but these may be signs of a deeper problem. With changing lifestyles, obesity and stress, we are seeing sleep apnea more frequently not only in adults but sometimes even in younger individuals.
