Investigation work finds tunnel under Godstone sinkhole

AN underground tunnel has been found eight metres underneath Godstone High Street, which collapsed in February this year.

Surrey County Council (SCC) has said its investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the length and positioning of the tunnel and how it will affect future repair works.

The council has also outlined its 'next steps' in ensuring the area and its residents can return to a life similar to before the major incident last year.

This includes reconnecting utilities damaged following the sinkhole, designing how the area will be repaired, and carrying out said repair works.

Matt Furniss, Cabinet member for highways, transport and economic growth at SCC, said: "This continues to be a highly complex incident involving a number of investigations led by our highways officers and other agencies, including specialist teams and utility companies."

At the end of May, the council announced that highway officers were carrying out detailed investigations into the cause of the collapse.
