WARTIME PRODUCTION ABOUT PARISH AIMS TO HELP PAY FOR CHURCH REPAIRS

Musical's set to raise the roof

A FORMER BBC TV producer has put together a musical documentary about wartime life in the parish of Weston Green to help raise funds for All Saints church roof.

The white church by the pond was consecrated in 1939. Months later the country was at war and Elmbridge paid a heavy price.

Weston Green was on the main supply route between London and Southampton; close to the Hawkers factory in Kingston where Hurricane bombers were being made and to Weybridge where Vickers was producing Wellingtons as fast as it could. On top of that the Thames, running like a ribbon through Hampton Court, made a perfect guiding pathway into London for German bombers.

The Esher Civil Defence Committee warned at the time: “We have concerns over the prominence of ‘the white church’ due to its light colouring during night bombing raids.”
