Record number of shoplifting crimes across the North East

A record number of shoplifting crimes were reported in the Northumbria Police area last year, new figures show.

The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) is warning shoplifting is not a "victimless crime", adding retail stores are being increasingly targeted by "organised crime gangs".
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show 18,334 shoplifting crimes were recorded by Northumbria Police in the year to March-up 20% on 15,317 the year before.
