Apartheid denialism perpetuates the original crime

A banner placed on a wall on a freeway in Johannesburg set tongues wagging this week, and reminded us how little it takes to expose the masked fissures of a supposedly united nation.

Solidarity, a rightwing organisation, and some would venture further and label it racist, put up the banner on the M1 highway near Wits University in Braamfontein, claiming South Africa is the most racially regulated country in the world. It was part of their relentless campaign against black economic empowerment, affirmative action or any other measure of post-apartheid redress.

SA has been a democracy for more than 31 years, but the harm caused by apartheid and oppression under colonial rule before that is so entrenched that it will take what seems like forever to undo.
