Tutu Puoane comes full circle

EIGHTEEN years after delivering one of the most talked-about performances at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), Tutu Puoane is returning, this time as a headliner.
The South African jazz vocalist, who has built a celebrated career in Europe, will take to the Rosies stage next month in what promises to be a full-circle moment.
“Landing this gig means so much to me. Still being booked at major festivals at home is a real treat and an opportunity I do not take for granted,” said Puoane as she prepares for her return.
Puoane first made a lasting impression at the festival in 2008. Many still recall that concert as one of the standout performances of the year.
When asked what she remembers most about that night, she laughed before offering an honest reflection.
“OMG, it was quite stressful to be honest,” she said.
“My daughter was only six months old, and my mom wanted to see the gig, of course, so we had to find a babysitter to come to our hotel room to look after our nonstop crying six-month-old. On top of that, I had nothing to wear, so yes, I remember that gig very well.”
Almost two decades later, the circumstances are markedly different. “This time around, our daughter is a young 18-year-old lady who does my makeup and styles me, so all should be fine on that front,” she added.
Returning as a headliner carries its own significance. Puoane is acutely aware of how competitive the local scene has become and does not take her place lightly.
