FOR all the money they have spent in this current transfer window, the most important signing in Liverpool's recent past came more than a year ago.

There cannot have been a manager who impressed as much in a single debut season in the Premier League season as Arne Slot did.

No matter what your accomplishments in other countries, your first season in England's top flight can often be a learning curve.

That was the case for Slot's predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, and, indeed, for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Only four managers had previously won the Premier League in their first season of management in English football Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte and Manuel Pellegrini and three of them benefited from the mighty financial backing of former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.
