DELIGHTED Michael Wimmer praised the character of 10-man Motherwell after their battling comeback win secured safety.

The Steelmen had fallen behind to an Antonio Portales screamer but levelled though Tom Sparrow after the break at Dens.

Wimmer's team then went down to 10 men after John Koutroumbis was sent off but grabbed the points and claimed safety thanks to sub Tawanda Maswanhise's 90th-minute header.

Wimmer said: “I am really happy we are safe. I know people said before the game we were seven points ahead and it was no problem that we'd stay in the league. But it is always better when you are mathematically safe.

“I'm proud of the guys and it was not the first time we changed the result, it was the fifth or the fourth time we've changed the result.

“It's a brilliant team effort, brilliant character and they deserved it.”
