Holocaust Day snubbed by schools since terror attack

AN Israeli minister has called on the Labour government to reverse the decline in UK schools marking Holocaust Memorial Day since Israel responded to Hamas’s atrocities on October 7, 2023.

Amichai Chikli, Israel’s minister for combating antisemitism, said it was a “cause for alarm” that the number of secondary schools joining commemorations had fallen nearly 60% in two years, according to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

He wrote to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson to share his “deep concern” ahead of the landmark day on Tuesday. He urged her to “intervene personally to ensure that Holocaust Memorial Day remains a national priority in the British education system, and that participation in its commemoration is actively encouraged not quietly abandoned”.
