Family 'bereft' at death of Swinging Sixties icon Annabel Goldsmith, 91

LADY Annabel Goldsmith, the society beauty who became an icon of Britain’s Swinging Sixties, has died at the age of 91 after a “very short illness”, her family said yesterday.

Her name was immortalised when her first husband named what would become one of the world’s most famous private nightclubs after her — ritzy Annabel’s in London’s Mayfair — when it opened in 1963.

As well as rubbing shoulders with the club’s rich, famous and powerful guests, Lady Annabel later went on to become the influential matriarch of the family of her second husband, flamboyant billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith as well as a close friend of the late Princess Diana.
