Emergency Day reminds us of the murder of democracy: Balbir

BJP spokesperson and former Vice Chairman, Balbir Ram Rattan, stated that June 25 marks a dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy. It was on this day in 1975 that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, heading the Congress government, imposed Emergency on the nation.

"We remember this day as the murder of democracy," he said.
Balbir said that the Emergency was the biggest assault on the Indian Constitution and civil liberties. For 21 months, from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, the country suffered a dark and oppressive regime. Freedom of the press was taken away, millions were jailed without trial, and political opponents were crushed.
