Romance and rivalry aboard the 'love boat'

As stories go, this one has been told many times - and has bored members of our family rigid for years.

It had something of a revival last weekend when the darling wife (aka The Head of the Household) and I celebrated our Ruby (40th) wedding anniversary.

There was a well-rehearsed script to answer the question, “And where did you first meet?”

The short answer is: we met in the crow’s nest of a replica of Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hinde ship.

The longer answer deserves more scene-setting...

Once upon a time, Carol Crowther (as she was then known) used to do a Saturday children’s show on Swansea Sound independent radio.

It was May, 1983, and I worked at the South Wales Evening Post headquarters in Adelaide Street, Swansea, not far from Swansea Marina.

It was a busy week as the marina was hosting the first Welsh Boat Show.

I was briefed by our newsdesk to report on the arrival of the Golden Hinde (or Golden Hind, as both spellings seemed to be used at the time).
