Bruno Guimaraes was keen to deflect the criticism aimed at goalkeeper Nick Pope following Newcastle United's 2-1 defeat to Marseille in the Champions League.

Newcastle led 1-0 at Stade Velodrome thanks to an early Harvey Barnes goal but Marseille found themselves level within seconds of the second half after Pope rushed off his line and didn’t get the ball, allowing Marseille’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to curl the ball into an empty net from distance.
The former Arsenal striker scored again minutes later as the Ligue 1 side turned the group phase tie around. It was another disappointing away defeat for Newcastle, who have lost each of their last four away from St James' Park - three of which have come after taking the lead.
