More than 8,000 children from low-income families took part in council-run holiday activities over the summer.

The figures emerged as council chiefs in South Tyneside marked one year of progress since its inaugural Child Poverty Summit - bringing together representatives from 100 organisations, with the aim of supporting children and families in hardship.
Cllr Tracey Dixon, leader for South Tyneside Council, says the council's Child Poverty Strategy is "making a real difference" to the lives of children and families in the borough.
Council figures show that over 8,000 children used the holiday activities and food (HAF) programme, which provides free activities and healthy meals to children from low-income families over the summer holiday period.
